Library Freak

Karen Creed was just another ordinary college student, working her last summer before senior year. Majoring in archeology, Karen was enthusiastic when it came to history. For this main purpose, she chose to work her summer at the local library, where she would have access to an abundance of history books. Karen and her fiancé, Gregory, were recently engaged and Karen felt as if she was on the top of the world.

“Karen, could you deliver these books to Nancy in the science fiction section, they just arrived,” commanded Beatrice.

“Sure, I’ll go, but you owe me Bea,” explained Karen. As she walked down the hall, she admired and observed the intricate pieces of artwork. When she arrived in the Science Fiction section she approached Nancy, “Nancy, Bea told me to give you these books, they just arrived.”

“OK, thanks Karen….so are you staying until closing time tonight?” asked Nancy.

“Yeah, I need the overtime money, I’m broke from college,” explained Karen.

Karen continued her work throughout the day and was excited to leave at closing time. “Bea, I’m leaving, me and Greg are eating over my parents’ house tonight,” stated Karen.

“Ok, but wait, before you leave could you go bring this box of books down to the basement?” asked Beatrice.

“Fine, but you owe me again Bea,” answered Karen.

Karen made her way to the elevator and waited for the old doors to open, she then stepped inside and made her journey down four floors. As she exited the elevator, she heard a big bang coming from down the hall and noticed that the light was on in the storage room. Karen, glued to the floor, shouted “Hello? Is anyone there?” No answer followed, but Karen was overtaken by a sense of fear. She slowly walked down the hall, each step she took felt as if she traveled a mile. Slowly she made her way to the half way point of the hall, she turned around and inspected her surrounding and then continued to walk down the hall. When she reached the end of the hall, she hesitated for a few moments and then placed her hand on the door knob. The cold knob contrasted the heat of her hand. Karen then placed her ear on the door and listened for any sounds, but she heard nothing. Karen gave a hesitant thought to whether she should open the door and then turned the knob ever slowly. She then gave the door a slight push and the door slowly opened a millimeter. Karen then called, “Is anyone in there?” Again, no answer was heard, so Karen gave the door another push and it swung open. As the door opened, Karen was shocked.

A blackened figure stood ten feet away. The figure had blood red eyes and blood ran down his nose. Karen was in shellshock and the figure began to walk slowly towards Karen. Karen, with violent screams, dropped the box of books and ran down the other end of the hall. She pressed the up button on the elevator, but the elevator would not open. She turned her back and saw the apparition walking towards her and her screams became more violent. Frightened to death, she abandoned the elevator and ran to the stairs. She climbed each step with determination and anxiety. When she reached the top floor she busted the door open and continued her screams until she reached Beatrice. As tears began to flow down her eyes, Karen began to panic. “Karen, what’s wrong! What’s wrong!” exclaimed Beatrice. Karen tried to respond, but the gibberish she spoke gave no information to Beatrice. After she calmed down, Karen explained the whole situation to Beatrice, but she hesitated to believe her.

Overhearing her story, Nancy acknowledged that she too experienced the blackened figure, but she had kept it a secret due to fear of taunting. As soon as Nancy finished speaking, a loud mumble was heard behind her. The three girls turned to look and saw the blackened apparition. Beatrice and Nancy began running for the exit, but Karen was again in shellshock. The apparition began to approach her again and Beatrice cried “Hurry Karen!” Karen snapped out of her shock and turned to run. The three girls exited the library screaming and crying like maniacs. Beatrice locked the front door and the girls frantically traveled home
.
The next day, all three girls quit their jobs at the library and none of them returned ever again. Karen was affected emotionally by the situation for over a week, but then moved on with her life. Until this day, the apparition haunts the library basement and the people who work there.
