Bayonne High School is now licensed to participate in
the School Counts Program, which is a program of the Business
Coalition for Educational Excellence through the New Jersey
Chamber of Commerce. The goal of School Counts is to show
students the correlation between their performance in high
school and their future in the work world by emphasizing
to students that what they do in school counts. The program
motivates students to keep their grades up, come to school
everyday, be on time, and take academically challenging
classes. School Counts encourages students to make the
most of their important high school years and acquire good
habits that they will need to succeed in the future. Surveys
show that employers care as much about attendance and punctuality
as they do about skills.
Dr. Patricia L. McGeehan,
Superintendent of Schools, states, “Pamrapo
Savings Bank has committed to serve as Bayonne High School’s
sponsor in this program. The cooperation of the community
is vital to the School Counts Program. On behalf of the
Bayonne Board of Education, I extend my gratitude for Pamrapo
Savings Bank’s generosity and support for this exemplary
program.”
At the end of the school year, students who have met the
criteria for attendance, punctuality, and grades will be
awarded a certificate. Students should present the certificate
with their applications for part-time or summer employment.
When prospective employers see the certificate, they will
know that the student has been successful in the program
and possesses the qualities of a good employee.
Career Internship Program
coordinators will approach local businesses asking them
to endorse
the program by recognizing
a student with a School Counts certificate when they are
hiring their part-time and summer help. “The program
is a win-win situation for Bayonne,” said coordinator
Dee Bludgus. “The students are acquiring skills that
will help them in the future, and businesses in Bayonne
are getting employees who are committed to the values of
coming to work everyday and being on time.” Coordinator
Frank Fusaro added, “It’s a documented fact
that students who are late for school, will ultimately
be late for work.” More information about the program
can be found on the web at www.schoolcounts.org.
