The History
of
Bayonne High School

In September 1936, when the main building of Bayonne High School was opened, two separate high schools were in existence in Bayonne for the next few decades. They were the Sweeney Senior High School (currently the main building) and the Pulaski Vocational technical School (vocational wing).

On April 15, 1953 the Bayonne Board of Education passed a resolution combining both schools into what is now commonly referred to as Bayonne High School.

In 1973, due to its large size, the Bayonne Board of Education divided Bayonne High School into six smaller schools or “Houses.” This is commonly referred to as a school within a school concept or House Plan. This successful venture affords the students enrolled here the intimacy of a small school while providing the facilities of a large institution.

In 1984, the entire vocational shop area was upgraded and a new wing was attached to the old Pulaski Building to provide our students with vocational training. In 1986, while continuing to upgrade our facilities, the Bayonne High School Physical Education/Community Education Center was opened. Located in the school’s quadrangle, this complex sports an indoor NHL regulation ice skating rink, gymnasium, a four lane indoor running track, six locker rooms, an office and meeting areas.

The pride that we feel for Bayonne High School begins in our community. Few schools can boast that many of their alumni return to the high school to be teachers and coaches. Many of the parents and grandparents who attend graduation experience a sense of honored tradition and self-satisfaction when they witness a second or third generation family member graduate from their alma mater.
