BHS Student Center
The Student Center at Bayonne High School serves as an essential resource for student wellness, operating under the School-Based Youth Services Program (SBYSP) State Grant. Its mission is rooted in promoting resilience and supporting students in reaching their full educational potential by providing comprehensive mental health and social-emotional support.
Staffed by a committed team of School Counselors, Social Workers, Licensed Counselors, and a Student Assistance Counselor (SAC), the Student Center offers a broad range of services including individual and group counseling, family counseling, crisis intervention, psychoeducation, prevention efforts, treatment referrals, and advocacy.
Using an evidence-based curriculum, Student Center Counselors lead classroom-based Social Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons and provide Tier 3 targeted counseling informed by data from school-wide SEL assessments, in alignment with the New Jersey Tiered System of Supports (NJTSS). The Counselors conducts suicide risk screenings, facilitate student conflict mediations, and provide counseling support in response to identified mental health needs.
The Student Center works in close collaboration with families, school staff, administrators, and local law enforcement to ensure a unified approach to supporting students. Additionally, they maintain strong partnerships with external providers, including hospitals, substance use treatment centers, outpatient therapists, and partial care programs, to ensure students receive comprehensive and continuous care.
With compassion, collaboration, and professional expertise, Student Center Counselors make a meaningful difference in the lives of students. Their work creates safe and inclusive spaces where students are empowered to share their experiences, overcome barriers, and thrive—academically, socially, and emotionally.
