    Dear Educational Explorer,

A great leader once said “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.” It is the mission of the District’s ESL and Bilingual department to expand our students’ language skills in English while furthering their appreciation of their native language/culture, and in doing so enrich our students’ hearts and minds.

Toward that end, October will be filled with activities and opportunities to celebrate our expanding world. During October, Back To School Night will provide an initial opportunity for parents/guardians of diverse language and cultural backgrounds to share in the school community and begin forging the bonds across culture and language.

As part of pushing beyond any limits on the world open to us, October will also be a time for marking our progress. For students, first marking period progress reports will be distributed on October 6th for the grade schools and October 11th for the high school. For staff, we will also have a training session on October 20th, after an abbreviated school day. Marking our students’ progress and expanding our staff’s knowledge base are just two of things we will focus on in October to further our mission and soar. Only our own imaginations and determination can limit the world open to us.

We look forward to letting you know next month some of the specific events and undertakings that we will mark our educational calendar along the way.

    Sincerely,

    Monica M. Flynn, Director
